About Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC)

What the data says

GBTC did not start from zero. It existed as a Grayscale trust from at least 2013 and became an ETF on 11 Jan 2024. Since then investors have taken out $28.05B more than they put in, the largest net outflow of any Bitcoin ETF. Our flow record starts on the listing day: coins the trust already held are not counted as inflow. Grayscale reports net assets of $9.62B, 10% of the Bitcoin ETF total and the 3rd largest of 12 by size.

Grayscale also runs another Bitcoin ETF, BTC.

Redemptions are the norm here: 363 outflow days against 67 inflow days since 11 Jan 2024. The heaviest day took out $642.5M on 18 Mar 2024, while the best inflow day managed $102.5M on 25 Feb 2026. Even its best calendar month, Jun 2025, ended with net outflows of $34.9M; the worst, Mar 2024, lost $6.36B.

The last 30 trading days to 30 Oct 2026 were the weakest of any Bitcoin ETF: $203.9M out, against $1.82B in for all Bitcoin ETFs together.

GBTC charges 1.50% a year, the highest fee among 12 Bitcoin ETFs and 6.5 times the median of 0.23%. On a $10,000 holding that is $150 a year, against $23 at a median-priced fund.

There is no average-entry estimate for GBTC: since it listed, more money has left than arrived, so there is no net cost base to measure.
