Why other sources show a different number

Five differences that explain most gaps between trackers

Which funds

Some totals add ETPs listed in Canada, Europe and Asia, which brings the figure to about 1.6 million BTC. This page counts US spot ETFs only.

Futures funds

Futures-based bitcoin ETFs hold contracts, not coins, so they are left out.

Converted trusts

GBTC counts in full, including the coins it held as a trust before January 2024.

Which supply

6.41% of the coins in circulation, 6.14% of the 21 million that will ever exist.

Which day

Some issuers publish the coins for day T, others for T+1; five funds have to be derived.

How we count

  • A spot Bitcoin ETF keeps real bitcoin with a custodian. The coins change only when shares are created or redeemed, and shrink slowly as the sponsor fee is paid out of the trust — at 0.25% a year on 800,000 BTC, about 2,000 BTC.
  • Published: BlackRock, Bitwise, 21Shares, VanEck, Morgan Stanley, CoinShares and Invesco report the bitcoin in their trusts.
  • Derived: for Grayscale, Franklin Templeton and WisdomTree we work out the coins from net assets per share and the bitcoin price of the same day; for Fidelity they are modeled from the fund’s daily flows.
  • History before 10 Sep 2026 is rebuilt from daily net creations (each day’s net flow in dollars divided by that day’s average bitcoin price) and anchored to the total the issuers reported on 11 Sep 2026. Sponsor fees paid out of the trusts are not added back, so the early months run a little low. We checked it at six quarter ends from December 2024 to June 2026 against the coins the largest funds reported to the SEC: the gap stays within about 1%.
  • Other coins. ETFs also hold ether, XRP, Solana and twelve more coins: how much of each coin ETFs hold.
