CEFI Index Explained: A Composite Signal for Crypto ETF Sentiment
The Centralised ETF Flow Intensity (CEFI) index normalises daily ETF flow across assets, fund concentration and historical context into one number you can actually compare.
TL;DR. Raw ETF flow data is hard to compare across assets and time because magnitudes differ by orders of magnitude (BTC vs SOL ETFs) and the category's AUM has grown 10× in two years. The CEFI (Centralised ETF Flow Intensity) index normalises daily net flow by asset AUM and a rolling baseline, producing a −100 to +100 composite that is directly comparable across BTC, ETH, SOL and XRP wrappers. Above +50 = strong inflow regime; below −50 = strong outflow regime; ±30 is the noise band.
The problem CEFI solves
Crypto ETF flow data is published as raw dollar amounts. That makes apples-to-apples comparisons painful in three ways:
- Cross-asset. Bitcoin ETFs hold $135B; Solana ETFs hold $1.2B. A $200M day on each is wildly different in significance.
- Cross-time. A $300M inflow into Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024 (when category AUM was $4B) was huge. The same $300M in January 2026 ($135B AUM) is routine.
- Cross-fund. $300M into IBIT alone vs $300M spread across all 10 funds tells different stories about institutional concentration.
CEFI handles all three by normalising. The index does not predict the future — it gives you a clean, comparable readout of the present-state intensity of flow activity across the category.
How CEFI is computed
The full methodology is in the open premium API docs; the essentials:
- Take each asset's daily aggregate net flow (BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP — additional assets when they launch).
- Divide by that asset's current category AUM. This gives flow-as-percent-of-AUM, removing absolute-size bias.
- Z-score against the trailing 90-day window for the same asset. This removes period-level drift.
- Clip extreme tails (beyond ±3σ) and map to a −100 to +100 scale.
- Aggregate the four asset scores using AUM-weighted average for the composite CEFI.

Reading the score

Tail days (±75 and beyond) cluster around specific events: ETF launches, macro shocks, halving cycles, and major regulatory news.
Three regimes the index has identified
Q1 2024 — launch euphoria
Daily composite CEFI averaged +62 in the first 8 weeks of US spot Bitcoin ETF trading. Peaks above +90 corresponded to single days of $700M+ aggregate inflow. The Q1 reading was clearly anomalous against any later period — the index made the regime visible from week one.
Q3 2024 — equilibrium
CEFI averaged +8 across July–September 2024 with a standard deviation of 22. Effectively a noise regime: ETFs were doing their job (steady accumulation) without large net swings. Bitcoin price was in a $55k–$67k range.
Q4 2025 — divergence
BTC-CEFI sat at +35 (sustained inflow) while SOL-CEFI sat at −10 (mild outflow) for several weeks. The composite at +22 obscured the divergence; the per-asset breakdown made it readable. This is the case for looking at per-asset scores alongside the composite.
What CEFI is NOT
Important caveats:
- Not a price predictor. CEFI is a present-state intensity metric, not a forward indicator. Correlation with next-week bitcoin returns is moderate (~0.4) — informative but not deterministic.
- Not a sentiment poll. It measures actual capital movement, not retail mood. Retail can be panicking on Twitter while CEFI is +60 because institutional accumulation continues.
- Lagging by T+1. The data is end-of-day disclosed by issuers and aggregated overnight. Today's score appears the morning after.
- Skewed by big issuer days. A single $1B inflow into IBIT can push BTC-CEFI dramatically. Within-issuer concentration is part of the signal but worth noting.
Cross-checking against macro
CEFI tends to dip ahead of risk-off events when forward-looking institutions de-risk: composite CEFI was at −45 in the three trading days before the August 2024 yen-carry unwind. How to use CEFI in practice
Three useful framings:
- Confirm narrative against data. If headlines say "institutions selling" but CEFI is at +25, the headline is misleading.
- Threshold positioning. Some traders gate sizing decisions on CEFI being in a specific regime (e.g., add to positions only when composite > +30; trim when < −30). Backtest before adopting.
- Cross-asset rotation signals. Watch the per-asset spread. If BTC-CEFI > SOL-CEFI for a sustained period, capital is rotating toward bitcoin within crypto allocations.
