The iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) holds 811,138 BTC as of 22 okt 2026 — 62.9% of all bitcoin in US spot ETFs, 4.04% of the bitcoin in circulation and 3.86% of the 21 million cap. The coins belong to the trust and its shareholders; BlackRock is the sponsor and charges the fund’s 0.25% annual fee.
A spot Bitcoin ETF keeps real bitcoin with a custodian. The coins change only when shares are created or redeemed, and shrink slowly as the sponsor fee is paid out of the trust — at 0.25% a year on 800,000 BTC, about 2,000 BTC.

Derived: for Grayscale, Franklin Templeton en WisdomTree we work out the coins from net assets per share and the bitcoin price of the same day; for Fidelity they are modeled from the fund’s daily flows.
History before 10 sep 2026 is rebuilt from daily net creations (each day’s net flow in dollars divided by that day’s average bitcoin price) and anchored to the total the issuers reported on 11 sep 2026. Sponsor fees paid out of the trusts are not added back, so the early months run a little low. We checked it at six quarter ends from December 2024 to June 2026 against the coins the largest funds reported to the SEC: the gap stays within about 1%.
