How we count coins held by ETFs

A spot crypto ETF holds the coin itself with a custodian. Each trading day the issuer publishes what the fund holds; the coins change only when shares are created or redeemed.

  • Coins held are taken from each fund’s latest issuer snapshot.
  • Where an issuer publishes shares and net assets instead of coins, we derive the coins from net assets per share and the coin price of the same day, and mark them derived.
  • We have no daily issuer snapshot for Fidelity’s funds, so their coins are modeled from the funds’ daily net flows and are marked derived too.
  • Share of supply divides the coins by the coin’s circulating supply, not by its maximum supply.
  • Converted trusts such as Grayscale’s GBTC and ETHE count in full, including coins held before they became ETFs.

What is not included

  • Coins held directly by companies, governments and exchanges, and ETFs listed outside the US.
  • Futures-based ETFs, which hold contracts rather than coins.
